Question: My mother and I have been away from the church and God for 5 years now. A good friend says we should get baptized again. Is this necessary? And what exactly does baptism represent?

Answer: It is good that your mother and you came back to the Lord, but it is not necessary to be rebaptized unless the Lord is leading you to do this. You shouldn’t get baptized because someone else says you should, this is a very personal thing between you and the Lord. There is only one case of ‘rebaptism’ is Scripture, and it is found in Acts 19:5. The reason for this rebaptism was not because they had been away from the Lord, so you will have to make up your own mind on that.

My wife has always thought she would like to get rebaptized because she was very young when she was baptized. She feels like she was baptized because other kids her age were doing it. I don’t know, she might one day do it again, but it will not change the fact that she is already saved. She was saved by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and through His blood. He knows her heart and He knows your heart. I don’t think a person should do this lightly, but if He wants you to be rebaptized I would say do it.

Baptism does not save us though! Baptism is a picture of us dying to the old life, being buried in death with Christ, and rising to newness of life. “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection…” (Romans 6:4-5).

Baptism is a command for all believers: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” (Matthew 28:19) I would encourage everyone who has not been baptized the first time to be baptized. I would question whether a person is truly saved if they don’t want to be baptized, since we are commanded by Christ to be baptized.

Now whether you and your mother should be rebaptized because you have a recommitment of your life to the Lord is between you and your Lord. It could be a good testimony to others that you mean business for the Lord, since for so many years people have not known what you stood for.
