Question: I want to work at a Christian school, and you have to sign a standard of conduct, but my husband believes no one should tell you how to live outside of a job! Would it be hypercritical to work at that school knowing his beliefs?

Answer: First of all, are there things on the standard of conduct that would be out of line with the Bible?

It is not unusual for certain jobs to require a person to sign a code of conduct. Teachers are one profession that does require a certain code of conduct. A teacher cannot only be fired but lose their teaching certificate if they break this code of conduct. After all, would you want someone who is a drunk teaching your child?

There are many other professions that require a code of conduct. A lot of jobs also require things like drug testing. Isn't this kind of like telling you what to do outside of your job?!

What exactly does your husband object to? Is it the signing of a paper that says you won't do certain things? Is it that he thinks they're trying to run your life?

There is nothing in the Bible that specifically addresses this. There are instances when God expects a certain code of conduct from people. Think of each of the promises God made to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, the children of Israel, etc. Each required certain conduct from them, and consequences if this “code of conduct” is broken.

You and your husband should sit down and talk this over. Try to understand why he objects to you signing this standard of conduct paper.

Then, pray. Really seek God's will as to where he wants you to work and minister.
