Bible Study Discussions with Gary Panell

Question: Recently we were asked a question about what a military wife should do about fear and worry over her military husband being away on duty.

Answer: I would suggest that first of all, you make sure you are attending and involved in a good, Bible-believing church.  You also need to have a network of support for both you and your husband.  This can come from your family, your church family, and the military also has support groups for dependents of military personnel.

There should be plenty of prayer support for both you and your husband.  You are not alone, and you need to surround yourself with people who will remind you that they are there for you, and that God is also there for you.

Make sure you pray for your spouse daily.  Literally bathe him in prayer because not only is he in a dangerous place, but there are a lot of temptations when he is out in the field.

God also speaks about fear and worry in the Bible.  “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”  (2 Timothy 1:7); “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 4:6-7)

We know that it is hard to be away from each other when your husband is sent overseas.  Gary was in the military for 3 years, and served a year in Vietnam.  He was also in the National Guard for 9 years, and went away for several weeks each summer.  It is hard when you don’t know what is happening to your loved one, but know that He is in the best hands, when he is put in God’s hands.
