Four In One Gospel (Part Five)
The Temptation of Christ in the Wilderness
Compiled by Gary T. Panell
(Words that are identical are only given usually once, and the repetition is
shown by three dots, such as "...".)
Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and
was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. (Luke 4:1) Immediately the Spirit
drove Him into the wilderness. (Mark 1:12) .to be tempted by the devil. (Matthew
4:1) And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was
with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. (Mark 1:13) .being tempted
for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward,
when they had ended, He was hungry. (Luke 4:2)
And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
(Matthew 4:2) Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son
of God, command that these stones become bread." (Matthew 4:3) And the devil
said to Him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."
(Luke 4:3)
But He (Jesus Luke 4:4) answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live
by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." (Matthew
4:4)
(Again Matthew 4:8) Then the devil, taking Him up on a (exceedingly Matthew
4:8) high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world (and their glory
Matthew 4:8) in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, "All this authority
(all these things Matthew 4:9) I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You
will (fall down and Matthew 4:9) worship before me, all will be Yours."
And Jesus answered and said to him, "Get behind Me, Satan! (Away with you Satan
Matthew 4:10) For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him
only you shall serve.'" (Luke 4:5-8)
Then the devil took Him up into the holy city (Jerusalem Luke 4:9), set Him
on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God,
throw Yourself down (from here Luke 4:9). For it is written: He shall give His
angels charge over you (to keep You Luke 4:10), and In their hands they shall
bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. (And Jesus answered and
said to him Luke 4:12). "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD
your God.'"(Matthew 4:5-7)
Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an
opportune time. (Luke 4:13) Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came
and ministered to Him. (Matthew 4:11)
